ADHD AWARENESS MONTH

Every year, the October month is marked as the ADHD Awareness month. It aims to break misconceptions and celebrate those who have ADHD. It is a common neurodevelopmental- condition, which includes attention difficulty, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. It usually begins in childhood and can persist in adulthood.

People with ADHD often have trouble paying attention, controlling impulsive behaviour for example – doing things without caring about the outcomes or being overly active. Although this condition can’t be cured but it can be managed and some symptoms might go away as the person grows up. Common symptoms of this condition includes – being unable to sit usually in quiet environment, unable to concentrate on task, excessive physical movement, excessive talking, interrupting conversation etc.

Living with ADHD can be difficult because the symptoms make everyday tasks challenging. ADHD is often associated with many misconceptions-

“People with ADHD can’t even focus” – people with ADHD can focus when they find things interesting.

“All kids with ADHD are hyperactive” – there are three type of ADHD and not all of them involve hyperactivity.

There are many more like these which needs to be cleared. Support is very important thing for a person who is suffering from ADHD, mainly from home and school. ADHD can make people feel frustrated, stressed and disrespected because of how a person is behaving. Parents can feel embarrassed about what their child does and what others think of their child. Teachers can also misunderstand behavior of a student who has ADHD. Parents and teachers often fail to understand that control attention, behavior and activity don’t come naturally. Instead of being frustrated or angry parents or teachers should try to be gentle and more understanding. They should know more about the condition and should help them with their daily routine.

People with ADHD should not be made to feel that they are different from other. They are just unique in
their own way –

1. They are highly creative

2. Innovative thinker

3. Always full of energy

4. Excellent problem solver at right environment

Organizations like CHHAD – Children and Adults with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder works to support people and their families who have ADHD. We can raise awareness of ADHD through social media, by having open communications, by organizing workshops and outreach programs etc.
